How do affirmations work?

Affirmations are positive self-statements that can help you to build self confidence and self esteem. They work by changing your thought patterns — instead of focusing on negative thoughts and insecurities, your brain starts to recognize and focus on positive things in life. With repetition, affirmations become part of your belief system and you’ll find yourself practicing more positive self talk than negative self talk.

Saying it out loud

Have you ever wondered why saying affirmations for self doubt work? It’s a simple matter of how our brain works. See, our subconscious brain doesn’t understand that things can be true or false. Anything our subconscious mind absorbs is taken at face value, no matter how truthful (or not) it might be.

It explains why we often have bad self esteem — we tend to hear a lot of falsehoods about ourselves over the years, but our subconscious tucks it away all the same. It can’t differentiate or dismiss anything! That is why affirmations, said loud and clear, will help you reframe your thoughts in a constructive way.

If you’re struggling to rid yourself of self doubt or low self esteem, there are a variety of affirmations that can help unlock your inner power. Here are a few common positive statements to boost self esteem that you might have heard of:

  • I am capable of hard work
  • I trust my intuition
  • I am strong enough
  • I am worthy of love
  • I am capable of positive change
  • I am worth it
  • I choose me
  • I am beautiful

These affirmations for self doubt and self acceptance are short and sweet, and easy to remember. That’s not a bad thing, mind you! It’s much easier to keep using your affirmations when you can remember them easily.

How to make affirmations work for you

The key to using affirmations effectively is consistency; repeating them every day will help them become ingrained in your subconscious mind. Additionally, make sure that your affirmations are specific and meaningful to you so they have the maximum impact. But don’t be too hard on yourself if you miss a day or if you can’t bring yourself to do it sometimes — instead, make sure to show yourself compassion and understanding.

The importance of staying positive and believing in yourself cannot be overstated. Staying positive helps us to build self confidence and self esteem, allowing us to make progress and tackle life’s challenges head on without fear or self doubt. You can use affirmations for self doubt to boost your confidence and self esteem on a daily basis.

In addition to affirmations for self doubt, certain practices such as meditation or journaling may also help in reinforcing a sense of self-belief and positivity. One of my other favorite things to do is to make and check in with my self care vision board, or select things from my self care menu to try.

Taking care of yourself doesn’t always have to involve grand acts

Sometimes it’s simply taking breaks throughout the day or disconnecting from electronics at night so you can reconnect with yourself. Other times, it’s trying really hard to keep a straight face while affirming that you are the best. But don’t worry – you won’t be having issues for long. The more you use your affirmations, the more your subconscious brain will believe them. Soon enough, you won’t feel weird saying them; you’ll feel confident and strong, ready to take on anything!

Ultimately, self care is all about giving yourself permission — permission to feel emotions without judgement, permission to take time off if needed, permission set boundaries with others if necessary, permission prioritize yourself above all else. By taking consistent acts of self care —whether big or small — we can develop a healthier relationship with ourselves by showing love and respect for who we are now and where we want to be in the future. It’s all about making positive thinking part of our daily lives.
