What is a self care vision board?

Let’s start by figuring out exactly what a vision board is. A vision board is a visual representation of your goals, dreams, and wishes. It’s a place to store inspirational images, quotes and affirmations, photos you love, ideas, and more.

A self care vision board is like any other vision board, but it’s specifically focused on your self care goals. Instead of thinking about the fashion you love or the places you want to visit, it’s a way of gathering up and displaying everything that motivates and inspires you to reach your self care goals. Think of a self care vision board as a great companion to a gratitude list or journal.

Why self care vision boards are great

Self care vision boards aren’t just something pretty to look at. A thoughtfully made vision board brings tons of benefits, like:

  • Helping you think about your future plans and goals
  • Acting as a powerful tool for motivation
  • Reminding you every day about what your self care goals are
  • Giving you a fun way to be creative
  • Encouraging you to build new skills and try new things

If you find looking at images, quotes, and affirmations inspiring then a self care vision board could be perfect for you!

How to make a self care vision board

Now we know what a self care vision board is and why they’re so useful, let’s have a go at making one! Here’s how to make your own vision or goal board in five simple steps.

1. Think about your self care goals

Sit down and think about what your self care goals might look like. Which areas of your life do you want to focus on the most? Maybe it’s your mental health or self love? Maybe it’s physical health and wellness? Think about what your main focus is right now, and build your vision board around your set goals.

This doesn’t mean you can’t have images of cozy reading vibes and relaxing baths if your goal is to work out more for your mental health, but having a theme or goal can help you find the inspirational images and quotes in the first place. Take time over this goal setting exercise — you don’t have to figure out your dream life goals or self care goals overnight.

2. Decide where to make your own self care vision board

Once you have your goals, it’s time to figure out where and how you want to make your vision board.

You could opt for a physical vision board on poster board or cork board, filled with images you’ve found in papers and magazines, as well as handwritten notes and postcards.

Another alternative is to create a digital vision board using a tool like Canva* or Pinterest. Here, you can gather images and inspiration from anywhere on the internet to create a self care vision board.

My favorite option is to create a digital vision board, and I love to use Canva*. It’s filled with stock photos, graphics, GIFs, and patterns that you can use to create a vision board. They have tons of self care vision board templates. There are also lots of gorgeous fonts built in to help you personalize the board and add your own quotes and messages. Pinterest is also a great place to look for vision board templates or vision board examples to inspire you.

3. Gather your materials

With your sights set on a physical or digital self care board, it’s time to gather some materials. These will look different depending on the type of board you’re making, but could include:

  • Pages from magazines or books
  • Mini posters and postcards
  • Handwritten notes and quotes
  • Printable posters and images
  • Positive affirmations
  • Photos from the internet
  • Online quotes
  • Patterns and textures
  • Stickers
  • Inspirational quotes

Gather up lots of supplies, seek out some vision board ideas, and you’re ready to create your very own self care vision board.

4. Assemble your self care vision board

Once you know what kinds of things to feature on your vision board, it’s time to put it all together.

Grab your poster board or your digital canvas and start putting your ideas together. Mix images, quotes, affirmations, photos, textures, patterns, and colors to create a self care vision board that inspires and motivates you to chase your self care goals.

Here’s a sweet and simple vision board I made in Canva:

5. Reflect on your vision board

Your self care vision board isn’t a make it and forget it kind of situation. Keep coming back to it to enjoy the real value of it — a daily reminder of inspo for your self care dreams and goals.

Make it part of your daily or weekly self care routine or Sunday routine to take a quick look at your vision board. You’ll also want to make changes and update it over time too, so that it’s always a dream board and not a “what I used to dream for” board.

Bonus idea: host a vision board party!

Making a vision board can be lots of fun. If you love the idea of putting one together and know your friends would too, why not host a vision board making party?

Get all your friends and family members together in one place — like your home, or maybe a private room in your favorite cafe or restaurant. Get lots of materials out and enjoy some drinks and snacks together while you make your own dream self care boards. This works as a remote self care group activity too — just get on your webcams and share your digital self care boards after!
