Self care isn’t just about taking care of your body and mind. The space you live in and work from can have a huge impact on how you feel going about your daily life. If you want to combine making your home feel better and self care, here are some ideas that are perfect for just that.
1. Declutter your home
Decluttering is one of my all-time favourite self care activities. Having clutter around you can make you feel down and disorganised, and removing it can really lift your mood — not only in the moment but into the future too.
Set aside some time to declutter your home. Start with a small space, like the corner of a room that you use the most. You might also want to start with the first room you see each morning — your bedroom. That way, there’s an immediate visual reminder of your hard work when you get up.
Look at what’s in your space and take everything out. Sort your belongings into categories — keep, maybe, and get rid of. Put back what’s staying, or find a suitable new home for each item. For things you don’t want to keep, see what can be donated or recycled rather than tossed out.
2. Organize your kitchen
There’s nothing better than walking into a recently organized kitchen. Everything’s where you need it to be, the washing up’s been done, and you can jump straight into preparing a recipe or baking something delicious.
Organizing your kitchen is a time consuming job, but it’s a fun self care activity too. After all, you can’t bake your favourite cookies if you can’t find the ingredients or the cookie cutters. The reward’s not only in a tidy kitchen, but the tasty food too.
This is a big job, so tackle it all at once and dedicate a few hours to it. Take everything out of the cupboards and see what you have. Declutter, and only put back the things you need — after giving your cabinets and kitchen a quick clean.
Map out your kitchen and work out the best cabinet for each type of item, so it’s in a logical place when you need it. Sort through ingredients and dried goods, and put back your cooking utensils and trays in a tidy manner. You could even decant things into matching containers if you want. It takes some time, but it’s well worth it.
3. Create a cozy reading corner
If you love getting all cozy with a good book, why not create a space just for that? This is a simple self care idea that gives you a usable space, and it’s also fun if you love to decorate and style things up.
Find a space in your home that you can repurpose into a reading corner. This might be the corner of a home office space, or it could be as simple as your favourite spot on the sofa.
Next, bring together different things that help that space feel cozy. A soft throw, a scented candle, and a tray where you can place your essentials are all great ideas. Use what you have for now, or buy new things if your budget allows for it. With your cozy reading space set up, all you need to do now is choose the perfect book to read.
4. Make your bathroom more relaxing
Our bathrooms can quickly become messy with daily use. Empty toilet rolls, makeup, skincare, and supplies all seem to end up multiplying until it’s out of control. Take back control and transform your bathroom into a more relaxing space.
First, take out any rubbish or recycling from your bathroom. If you find the space quickly ends up messy, consider adding a bathroom bin if you don’t already have one.
Next, think about what’s in the room and the best way to organize your belongings. Try different ways of storing things in your bathroom cabinet, and figure out whether you need some extra bathroom storage.
Once you’ve found a home for things it’s time to make the space feel relaxing. Give your bath mat a wash so it’s all fresh, or buy a new one and a matching shower curtain if you want to. Make sure you have fresh towels ready to go, and keep the surface clutter to a minimum. Think about adding in some decor elements — like real or fake plants, artwork in a frame, or a new toothbrush holder to bring in some colour and theme to your space.
5. Tidy your home office space
Last but not least, tidying your work from home space can bring you a lot of relief. It’s a place that, if you’re anything like me, ends up cluttered on a daily basis. Clearing that off, and organizing it so it makes sense, is a great investment in your self care.
Like with our other spaces, start by decluttering and removing any waste. Give your desk a clean, and dust off your monitor, keyboard, mouse, and tower unit or laptop. Consider how you need your home office to function, and think about moving furniture around to see if you can create a more productive space. Like with your bathroom, I’d also recommend keeping clutter to a minimum and investing in a cabinet or sideboard as storage.
